August was born on February 28th, 1915 in Elsenz, Baden, Germany. August's father was Karl Friedrich Kesel and his mother was Anna Maria Ficht. His paternal grandfather was Franz Kesel. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Karl, Franz, Anton, Anna Maria, Ottilia, Maria, Klara and Kordula Zäzilia. He was the third youngest of the nine children.-
