Philipp was born on July 24th, 1790. Philipp's father was Franz Joseph Kesel and his mother was Margaretha Hofmann. His paternal grandparents were Franciscus Kesel and Margaritha Müller. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Franz, Franz Anton, Johannes, Kaspar, Anton, Josefa, Elisabetha and Margarethe. He was the second oldest of the nine children.
