Franz Joseph was born on March 3rd, 1764 in Hilsbach (A. Sinsheim), Baden, Germany.

Franz Joseph's father was Franciscus Kesel and his mother was Margaritha Müller.  His paternal grandparents were Johannes Georg Kesel and Maria Ursula Krein. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Franz, Johannes Georg, Joseph, Franz Wilhelm, Karl Joseph, Margaretha, Josepha Margaretha, Maria Elisabetha, Maria Catharina and Carolus Josephus.  He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Johann Georg, Conrad, Konrad and Catharina Elisabetha.  He died at the age of 53 on April 25th, 1817.
